We’re excited to welcome Christopher Tidball to the Alto team as Director of Product Management, Supply Chain & Fulfillment. Most recently, Christopher led a large team of product managers, engineers and program managers at Amazon to power the company’s most complex fulfillment operations. 

As Alto continues to expand our geographic footprint and customer base, Christopher’s nearly 20 years of industry experience will support us in scaling our systems, so that we can continue to deliver the same high standards of care and service to even more communities.

We recently sat down with Christopher to learn more about his passions both in and outside of work, what drew him to Alto, and the operational opportunities he’s most excited about. 

Welcome to Alto! What inspired you to join the team?

Before a recruiter ever reached out to me about a role at Alto, my wife and I were very satisfied customers. We had been on a long journey of trying to start a family, and that ultimately led us to a fertility clinic that recommended Alto. We had a great experience from day one: the app was easy to use, the same-day deliveries from couriers were always on time, and Alto’s pharmacists walked us through the various medications in our delivery and answered all of our questions. 

Alto’s focus on the customer experience was immediately clear, and I made a mental note that this was the type of company I’d like to work for. Fast forward a few months later, a recruiter reached out and introduced me to the leadership team whose passion and experience sold me on leaving Amazon to come here.

As the Director of Product Management - Supply Chain and Fulfillment, I'll focus on the technology investments that can help us continue to grow and offer exceptional service to our customers. “Supply chain” covers a lot of ground: procurement, inventory, pharmacy operations, delivery, and more. There are tons of opportunities to automate processes to make it easier for Altoids to run the business, especially as we grow and expand. 

What areas of the business are you most excited about?

The operations side has always been exciting to me—it's where the magic happens. At the end of the day, if we don't have sustainable, efficient ways to fulfill the promises we make to our customers, we won't survive. 

Alto has a great business model, and many happy customers to show for it, but there’s always room to continue to innovate and improve the delivery experience. It's one of the few in-person interactions we have with the customer and we want to make it exceptional.

Tell us about life outside of Alto. Are you doing anything interesting at the moment?

I'm a pilot in training — I'm about 75% of the way to getting my single-engine license. I live in Seattle so the aerial views of the city, Puget Sound, and the Cascade Mountains are absolutely breathtaking. Flying gives you a sense of freedom that reminds me of when I first got my driver's license.

Infertility is often thought of as exclusively a women’s health issue, but the truth is that it can affect anyone regardless of gender. We explain more including male infertility causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

Male Infertility: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Infertility is often thought of as exclusively a women’s health issue, but the truth is that it can affect anyone regardless of gender. About one-third of infertility cases include factors exclusively related to male reproductive function.

If you’ve experienced infertility, you’re not alone: about 9% of men and 11% of women in the U.S. have faced fertility challenges. And while these challenges may feel overwhelming, they do not necessarily mean that you won’t be able to start a family one day — there are a variety of fertility treatment options for both men and women to support your family building journey.

Below, we explain more about male infertility, including causes, symptoms, and treatment options that can help you build or add to your family.

Male infertility most often stems from issues with sperm production. In some cases, it may be a problem with the quality of your sperm, like how fast or how well your sperm move. In other instances, it’s a matter of sperm quantity: you may not be able to produce any sperm, or you may have a low sperm count (the threshold is typically a sperm count under 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen.)

Issues with sperm production or function may be caused by the following:

Hormone, pituitary gland, or immune system problems

Hemochromatosis, a condition in which you have an excess of iron in your system

Lifestyle and environmental factors can also play a role: heavy smoking (20 or more cigarettes per day), consistent heavy drinking or binge drinking (for men, five or more drinks in a two-hour timeframe), drug use, and exposure to toxins like endocrine disruptors contained in plastics and pesticides have been linked to male infertility.

Beyond issues with sperm production, anything that blocks a reproductive organ can interfere with the flow of semen, including inflammation from a sexually transmitted infection, scar tissue from surgery, or swollen veins in any of your reproductive organs. Additional factors in male infertility include erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, liver or kidney disease, and treatment for seizure disorders.

You may have a greater chance of experiencing fertility issues if you have had any of the following:

Inflammation of your prostate or genital infections

Certain prescription medications may also increase your risk of infertility, including:

5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, a medication class used to treat prostate enlargement and hair loss, which includes finasteride (Propecia®) and dutasteride (Avodart®)

Alpha blockers like silodosin (Rapaflo®), tamsulosin (Flomax®), alfuzosin (Uroxatral®), terazosin (Hytrin®), and doxazosin (Cardura®), which are used to treat prostate enlargement

Some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) used to treat depression and anxiety, including sertraline (Zoloft®) and paroxetine (Paxil®)

Spironolactone, which may be used to treat high blood pressure or acne

Cimetidine, which is used to treat acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) 

If you and your partner are unable to conceive after trying for at least a year, one or both of you may be experiencing infertility. If you have experienced any of the following symptoms, you may wish to consult with your doctor about a potential diagnosis of male infertility:

Problems with ejaculation, including delayed ejaculation

If you have previously had surgery in your genital area, you should also consult with a doctor about potential infertility issues.

To evaluate you for an infertility diagnosis, your doctor will first ask questions about your medical history, including your sexual history and any other factors that may affect your reproductive health and fertility. They may also do a physical exam to check your genitals for any abnormalities.

The next step is typically a semen test, sometimes called a sperm count. Your doctor will ask you for a sample of semen. During their evaluation, they will look at how many sperm you produce and whether the sperm are normal in shape and movement — healthy sperm have an oval head and long tail.

Your doctor may recommend additional tests, including blood tests to evaluate your hormone levels and to rule out other health conditions, and genital ultrasounds to identify potential reproductive health issues.

Thanks to the medical community’s advances in fertility treatment and technology, infertility issues do not mean that you won’t be able to build a family. There are a range of treatment options that can help increase your chances of conception. Your doctor will make recommendations for the best course of treatment based on the underlying cause of your fertility issues.

Oral medications such as the following are the firstline treatment for most cases of male infertility.

Clomid® is an oral medication that can increase testosterone and sperm production as well as improve sperm motility.

Letrozole (Femara®) is an oral medication that can improve sperm count and motility. A non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor, it functions by decreasing estrogen production.

Anastrozole (Arimidex®) is another oral non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor used to increase sperm count and improve sperm motility. It can also help restore the testosterone-estrogen balance for some men experiencing infertility.

Additionally, tadalafil (Cialis®, Adcirca®), vardenafil (Levitra®, Staxyn®), and sildenafil (Viagra®, Revatio®) may be used to treat erectile dysfunction, a factor in male infertility.

An evaluation is typically scheduled after 3-6 months of treatment. If oral medications haven’t been effective by this point, a provider may recommend injectable gonadotropin therapy or assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatments.

There are two types of hormones used in injectable gonadotropin therapy: human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and follicle stimulating hormone/luteinizing hormone (FSH/LH).

hCG treatment triggers the testes to produce testosterone, which leads to production of new sperm. Common hCG medications used to treat male infertility include Pregnyl®, Novarel®, and Ovidrel®. 

FSH/LH treatment triggers production of new sperm. Common FSH/LH medications used to treat male infertility include Gonal-f®, Follistim®, and Menopur®.

hCG treatment can be used alone to stimulate sperm production, but FSH/LH treatment must be used in tandem with hCG treatment. If hCG treatment is not successful after six months, FSH/LH treatment may be added to a medication protocol.

While injectable therapies are effective, they take time to work. The length of treatment ranges from six months to 1-2+ years. Keep in mind that once new sperm is produced, it takes an additional 3-4 months before it is available. 

Assisted reproductive technology treatments

There are several fertility treatment options that can increase your chances of conceiving a child, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) using a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and different forms of artificial insemination like intrauterine insemination (IUI).

In intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) a single sperm can be injected directly into an egg. This procedure is often incorporated into an IVF cycle for many couples affected by male infertility. IVF is a process in which eggs and sperm are fertilized in a laboratory and then placed into the uterus with the potential outcome of a pregnancy. Women trying to conceive may undergo IVF treatment if their partner is experiencing male infertility to increase their chances of conceiving. ICSI can be the fertilization method used in IVF.

In IUI, sperm that have been washed and concentrated are placed directly into your partner’s uterus around the time that they are ovulating, helping your sperm reach an egg more easily.

Since lifestyle habits like heavy smoking or alcohol use can affect sperm production, you may be able to increase your sperm count with healthy choices like exercising regularly and abstaining from cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs.

The Next Evolution of Our Company Values

A lot has changed at Alto since Matt and I first set out to transform the pharmacy experience back in 2015. (For one thing, we no longer work out of a storage closet.) In the past two years alone, we’ve quadrupled our team to more than 1,000 Altoids and opened new locations in Denver, Las Vegas, Seattle, New York City, Houston, Dallas, San Jose and San Diego.

Our mission — improving the quality of life for everyone who needs medicine — will never change, but a team of 1,000 needs a different recipe for success than one of 100. And as our team continues to grow, along with our geographic footprint, we’ve revisited our core values so that we can move forward with intention and clarity during this next phase of Alto’s journey.

Here are the values that guide our work today.

This was at the top of our founding values, and it’s still here. In fact, our resolve to put patients first has only gotten stronger — not because it’s what is best for the business, but because it is our only reason for being in business. Each member of our team strives to build a world where healthcare companies truly prioritize the needs of their patients, and we’ll do everything in our power to make that a reality.

My personal favorite of all our new values, dancing in the storm is about embracing the bumps in the road — and there are many when you’re taking on challenges within healthcare — and recognizing that you can always choose joy. We strive to help our teammates do the same by infusing a little bit of levity and laughter into the workday. It only takes one person to start a dance party!

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Nor is it the absence of strong opinions, but the willingness to learn and change our minds. Sometimes our ego takes over — that’s only human. But we try to be mindful of it, and willing to let go of our ego and instead put our mission, customers, and teammates ahead of ourselves.

We view ourselves as creators of our circumstances, responsible for our actions and our own well-being. When we don’t like an outcome, we don’t project blame onto others or ourselves, but rather take radical responsibility for how we created the situation. More than any other value, this is an opportunity for deep internal reflection, and by practicing it consistently, we can maximize our own individual growth.

We say what is true for us in the moment, even when it is uncomfortable. We support our teammates to do the same by recognizing the validity of their experience and not taking it personally. Leading with candor isn’t always easy, but it feels much better to live authentically and honestly and to work with others who do as well. Candor doesn't have to be angry or hurtful - it can be kind and binding, compassionate and respectful.

It’s easy to become paralyzed by fear, overwhelmed by all of the possibilities in a complex situation. So unless a decision involves customer or employee safety, we don’t wait for perfect information. We trust our intuition and common sense and simply forge ahead, knowing that mistakes are in fact one of the best ways to learn.

There are no shortcuts or silver bullets in an industry as complex as healthcare. The way to achieve transformational change is through continuous improvement over a long period of time. When we’re overwhelmed by the magnitude of what we’re trying to accomplish, we remember that what each of us does adds up — one step at a time, one customer at a time — and that with small but steady progress we can accomplish great feats.

As a company grows, issues no longer affect a few customers, but a few thousand. It’s tempting to only look at trends and aggregates, but we know this is a trap. Greater distance from individual examples creates more opportunity for misunderstanding, bias, and incorrect assumptions. So we look beyond surface-level data and dive deep into the details. Only then can we fully understand an issue to its core.

Values themselves are just words, and the words themselves are not that important. What’s important is how we live them day in and day out, and the culture they support. In the months ahead, we’ll continue to integrate these values into the fabric of our company processes, our products, our customers’ experiences, and our work lives. And this work is not something just a few leaders or HR team members do - every Altoid has a hand in bringing these values to life and co-creating our culture.

Insulin pumps have become increasingly widespread in diabetes treatment in recent years due to their convenience and ease of use. Read on for more information about these devices.

The Role of Insulin Pumps in Diabetes Treatment

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes involve complications with the body’s production of insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas that converts sugar into energy. People living with type 1 diabetes do not produce any insulin at all, so they have to take insulin every day to keep their blood sugar levels in a healthy range.

Insulin therapy may also play a role in managing type 2 diabetes, since individuals with the condition do not produce a sufficient amount of insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. However, some individuals with early-stage type 2 diabetes are able to manage their blood sugar with other medications and healthy lifestyle habits — make sure to consult with your doctor on the best course of treatment given your needs.

There are several methods available for delivering insulin into the body, including syringes,  insulin pumps, and pens. Insulin pumps have become increasingly widespread in diabetes treatment in recent years due to their convenience and ease of use.

What is an insulin pump and how does it work?

An insulin pump is a small electronic device that delivers doses of insulin at specific times. It mimics the activities of a normally functioning pancreas by delivering small, continuous doses of insulin throughout the day and surges of insulin while you eat. You set the schedule, and it is easy to make adjustments if your dosage changes or if you eat or exercise more than usual on any given day.

While an insulin pump’s consistent delivery of insulin is effective in keeping your blood sugar levels within a healthy range, it is still important to check your blood sugar throughout the day using either a blood glucose meter or a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Some newer insulin pumps are connected to a CGM, which allows for both automated glucose monitoring and insulin delivery.

Many people who use insulin pumps find them to be more convenient than insulin injections, particularly while on the go. Insulin pumps offer the flexibility to work, socialize, or engage in just about any other activity without stepping aside to give yourself an insulin injection. And their automated, adjustable delivery makes it simple to maintain healthy blood sugar levels: not only do you not have to worry about missing a dose, but you can easily add, remove or modify a dose depending on your calorie intake and level of physical activity.

Most insulin pumps are designed to store dosing data, so you and your doctor’s office will have easy access to details about your insulin regimen should you need to make any adjustments to your treatment plan. 

Depending on the type of insulin pump you have, the device may be able to streamline other aspects of diabetes management. In addition to the automated blood sugar readings offered by CGM-connected pumps, some pumps have tools to help with carbohydrate counting. (Monitoring how many carbohydrates you consume is an important aspect of diabetes management as they increase your blood sugar, and your daily insulin dosage depends on your insulin-to-carb ratio.)

Insulin pumps deliver very precise doses of insulin, so there is a low risk of complications. However, it’s important to make sure you know how to properly set up your pump and to continually monitor your blood sugar levels. Your doctor or a diabetes educator can help you get started.

Choosing between an insulin pump and other delivery methods is ultimately a matter of personal preference, but they are often a good fit for children and anyone who has had difficulty remembering the timing of their insulin injections. You may also want to consider using an insulin pump if you absorb food slowly or if you often experience low blood sugar as a result of insulin use (also referred to as an insulin reaction or hypoglycemia). Consult with your doctor to choose the best insulin delivery method for your individual health needs.

Many women who are pregnant or trying to conceive also benefit from the consistent and precise delivery of an insulin pump, as blood sugar management is especially critical while your baby’s major organs develop. If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, you may want to ask your doctor if an insulin pump is right for you.

There are two main types of insulin pumps: tubed insulin pumps (sometimes referred to as traditional insulin pumps) and insulin patch pumps. Tubed insulin pumps deliver insulin from a delivery chamber — in this case a container located within the pump — into a tube inserted beneath your skin, usually on the abdomen. (A healthcare professional like your doctor or a diabetes educator can show you how to insert the tubing.) Manufacturers of commonly used tubed insulin pumps include Medtronic and Tandem®.

Insulin patch pumps combine the delivery chamber and tube into a single “pod” placed on your skin with an adhesive patch. Insulin patch pumps do not have any external tubing and are controlled wirelessly. Commonly used patch pumps include Omnipod® and V-Go®.

You can put a tubed insulin pump in your pocket, on your belt, or attach it to a strap beneath your clothes. Insulin patch pumps are most commonly placed directly on your stomach or arm. Both types of insulin pumps require you to change the tubing or pods every one to three days. A diabetes educator or healthcare provider can answer any questions and help you become more comfortable using the device.

What to consider when deciding to use an insulin pump

When talking to your doctor, here are some considerations that may help you determine if an insulin pump is the most convenient way to manage your blood sugar, or your child’s.

An insulin pump may feel slightly more complex than injections, as it involves frequent interactions with technology. Your diabetes care team can help you become more comfortable with the device.

You will need to verify which type of pump(s) your insurance plan covers and decide if those options are the right fit for your needs and budget.

Whether you go with a tubed or patch pump, you’ll have an electronic device attached to your skin, which may take some getting used to. There are lots of ways to make them less visible, if that’s a concern.

If you’re still unsure, remember that you’re allowed to change your mind! While insulin pumps are most commonly used on a continuous basis, the device is not permanently attached to your body, and some people switch to injections for certain periods of time. 

For example, some children with diabetes may use an insulin pump during the school year but take insulin via injections during the summer. There is room for flexibility as long as you discuss your plan with a healthcare professional and follow their recommendations.

Most insurance plans have separate medical and pharmacy benefits. In most cases, professional services provided by your doctor will fall under medical benefits while prescription diabetes medications — including insulin — will fall under pharmacy benefits. 

Pumps, CGMs, and supplies like test strips will likely be covered under a third type of benefits: the Durable Medical equipment (DME) section of your policy. There may be restrictions on the brands or suppliers that are available, and it’s important to check with your specific policy to understand what will be covered and under which sections.

Tubeless patch pumps like Omnipod® and V-Go® are often covered with your pharmacy benefits. If that’s the case, Alto may be able to help you get started with your insulin pump. We will work with your insurance (if applicable) and any third party savings programs so that you can get your insulin pump at the lowest possible price.

Every day, clinical teams -  including prescribers and other clinical staff like nurses, practice coordinators, and billing specialists - spend hours tracking down insurance information, coordinating approvals and appeals, discussing options with their patients, and playing phone tag with pharmacies. The Providers Team enables these healthcare providers to spend more time on patient care and less time on back office tasks. 

Alto’s provider communications platform, Alto Connect, and related services, including insurance benefits coordination and prior authorization management, remove clinical blockers that traditionally slow down or prevent an individual’s access to treatment. How does the Providers Team play into the overall growth of Alto Pharmacy?

The Providers Team is fairly new, as they were originally part of a larger Growth team within Alto. Kjersten Elias, Engineering Manager, explains: “Alto's growth model is driven by conversations about pharmacy choice in the doctor’s office, and in the fall of 2020, we dedicated an engineering team to optimizing our product offerings and improving the experience for the healthcare providers having those conversations.”

Anu adds, “The key for our business’ continued growth is having healthcare providers trust that we are the best pharmacy for their patients and leverage us as their pharmacy of choice. This type of growth channel is much more powerful than anything direct to the consumer. We can only do this however, if our providers have an excellent experience with us, and we’ve only scratched the surface here.” 

Being part of a newer team has distinct advantages. Software Engineer Dereck Quock notes, “We have unique opportunities to modernize how we build apps and define our infrastructure and technical needs. With the freedom to utilize cutting edge tech and new frameworks, there is so much room for innovation.”

What is the culture of the Providers Team like?

The engineers each raved about a small-but-important recurring calendar invite each Friday: Team Time. This protected time is a space to catch up, banter about anything other than work, and, if folks are feeling brave, face off with Anu, former Teen Tournament champion, in a rousing game of Jeopardy.

It's not hard to see why Kjersten and her team light up when they talk about team culture. Amy Chen, a Software Engineer on the team, shared that  “Kjersten is an incredible manager. Everyone is empowered to ask for and share feedback, fine-tune our processes, and check in with each other.”

“When I joined, I could tell right away this team really lifted each other up and had each other’s backs,” said Dereck. “It’s one of the greatest teams I’ve worked on.”

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from September 15 - October 15 every year, Alto is highlighting the important work of Alto Auténtico, our Latinx employee resource group (ERG)*. Below, Robert Barahona, Provider Success Specialist and co-leader of Alto Auténtico, shares more about the group’s origins, current initiatives, and plans for the future.

Robert: “Auténtico” means authentic in Spanish, and authenticity is central to the ERG’s mission. The group was created to ensure that Alto’s Latinx team members have a presence and a voice within our company culture, and that they are supported in their professional development with meaningful opportunities to grow at Alto.  

Robert: Our focus is both internal and external. In addition to developing a Latinx community at Alto, we also shape Alto’s product and services so that we’re better serving our Latinx users (more about that later). Much of that work involves building awareness of Latinx history and cultural contributions, as well as bringing attention to negative stereotypes that we want to dismantle.

We use holidays and events like Day of the Dead (November 1st and 2nd) and Cesar Chavez’ birthday (March 31) to share educational resources with our team members. On Cinco de Mayo, we hosted a Zoom happy hour and a taco lunch for all our pharmacies.

For last year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, we invited Dr. Robert Rodriguez, the president of diversity consulting firm DRR Advisors and a thought leader in Latinx talent management, to speak at Alto. He shared about his own journey of repressing his background to assimilate in the workplace to fully embracing his heritage and empowering other Latinx employees to be their authentic selves.

How are we celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month this year?

Robert: We’re focusing on celebrating Latinx intersectionality. It’s important to recognize the diversity within Latinx culture and the important perspectives of Latinx women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those of mixed heritage, including our Black and Asian members who also identify as Hispanic or Latinx. Every week during Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re educating the full Alto team about a specific group within the broader Latinx community, with resources for additional learning.

What can team members look forward to from Alto Auténtico in the future? 

Robert: We’re really excited to continue to help shape Alto’s services and resources for customers, making our offerings as inclusive as possible. We’re currently working with the operations, product, and marketing teams to establish a bilingual team to support Spanish-speaking individuals using our pharmacy delivery services across all of our communities. 

We’re also launching a mentorship program in which Alto’s junior Latinx team members will be paired with senior Latinx team members for coaching sessions. This is another important step in continuing to invest in our Latinx team members’ professional development.

How can allies recognize Hispanic Heritage Month?

Robert: Great question! I think learning is key. Simply taking the time to educate yourself about the Hispanic and/or Latinx experience — particularly about our diversity as a group — goes a long way toward building trust, which is key to true allyship.

Heart-healthy living is a lifelong practice. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of the top heart disease prevention actions to tackle during each decade of life.

How to Prevent Heart Disease at Any Age

You may associate heart disease with aging, and for good reason — individuals age 65 and older face a higher risk for the condition. This stems in part from how aging-related changes in your body overlap with risk factors for heart disease. For example, your arteries and heart muscle stiffen with age, making it more difficult to pump blood well during exercise.

Still, it’s never too early to prioritize a heart-healthy lifestyle. As heart disease-linked conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure grow increasingly common among young adults, many people are now becoming at risk for heart disease at an earlier age. 

And even if you are young and in good overall health, the choices you make today can affect your heart health for years to come. Cardiovascular health issues like heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure often stem from a lifetime’s worth of health choices, including many you have control over.

Since heart-healthy living is a lifelong practice, it may feel more manageable if you set specific goals and priorities impactful for your age group. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of the top heart disease prevention actions to tackle during each decade of life. This is intended to be a high-level guide to prevention, so consult with your healthcare provider about more targeted priorities based on your individual health needs.

You’re out in the real world, exploring what you want your life to look like. It’s normal to experience some anxiety during this exciting but nerve-racking time. Your cardiovascular health may not be top of mind as you navigate a stressful job search, adjust to the pressure of beginning a career, or start a family, but taking several heart healthy actions during this decade of life will put you on the right track early on.

Focus on building a foundation for a healthy lifestyle. That means quitting smoking if you currently smoke, figuring out which physical activities work for you, and getting in the practice of staying up to date with yearly doctor’s appointments. If you don’t already have a primary care provider, now’s the time to search for one.

2. Prioritize your mental health — whatever that looks like for you

3. Contact relatives to build your family medical tree

There’s a good chance your calendar’s looking pretty packed these days. Momentum in your career may come with more responsibilities and later nights in the virtual or physical office. And for those who already have a family, or are thinking of starting one, maintaining work-life balance may be a challenge.

As you continue to build on the foundation you set in your twenties, here are three new action items to add to your health routine. First, remember your favorite physical activity? Make sure there’s a block of time in your schedule for it each week.

Since your mental health can significantly impact your physical health — and your risk for heart disease in particular — be sure to give your emotional well-being some attention during what may be a hectic time. 

Some stress is to be expected when you have many responsibilities at work or home (or both), but if you’re concerned about your mental health, don’t be afraid to ask your doctor for suggestions or resources. You can also check out Moodfit, a free mood-tracking app, or Insight Timer, an app that offers free guided meditations.

Lastly, since your family’s health history is a big predictor of your own risk for cardiovascular disease, take some time to contact relatives and figure out if heart health issues run in your family tree.

3. Stay current with annual check-ups and screenings

Does it feel like life has only gotten faster? Believe it or not, your metabolism has already begun to slow down. That means it’s time to amp up your workout routine, if you haven’t already. Enjoying your chosen exercise method is key to sticking with it in the long term, so if you haven’t found your go-to activity just yet, keep looking. If you’ve only ever worked out on your own, try a group class, online or in person.

It’s time to check in on your sleep hygiene, too. Regular sleepless nights have been linked to heart attacks, high blood pressure, and diabetes, so if you’re getting in less than an average of seven hours every night, try to set yourself up for a good night’s sleep. Winding down at the same time each night, avoiding heavy meals just before bed, and spending plenty of time outside are just a few of the simple steps that might be able to help you get more rest.

At your annual physicals, be sure to discuss your risk for heart disease with your doctor and ask about recommended screenings for your individual health needs, including a fasting blood glucose test to screen for diabetes.

3. Learn the warning signs of a heart attack

Your risk for high blood pressure and high cholesterol will continue to increase as you age, so it’s important to keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels. If you have high blood pressure or cholesterol, follow the treatment plan your doctor has recommended, which may include diet changes, medication, or a combination of both. Even if your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers are within a healthy range, you can only benefit from limiting your sodium and cholesterol intake.

You should also learn the warning signs of a heart attack, as your risk for one also increases with age: 65 is the average age of a first heart attack for a man, and 72 is the average age of a first heart attack for a woman.

Keep in mind that heart attack symptoms may appear differently in women than in men.

Remember, these suggestions are intended as a starting point. Your doctor can advise you on a more individualized plan of action based on your health history. And not only is it never too early to begin prioritizing heart disease prevention, but it’s also never too late. Don’t worry about what you should or could have done earlier in life — instead focus on the actions you can take to be as healthy as possible in the present.

Staying physically active and avoiding foods that are high in sodium and trans fats are simple ways to take charge of your health at any stage of life. Here are more specific suggestions for heart-healthy living in terms of diet and exercise.

As you plan a heart-healthy diet, opt for foods that are low in saturated fats and trans fats, which increase levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol — also referred to as “bad cholesterol” — in your blood. Low-fat dairy products and chicken are healthier alternatives to full-fat dairy products and red meats, which are high in saturated fats.

High sodium intake can increase your blood pressure, and the American Heart Association suggests aiming for 1,500 mg of sodium/day. Limit processed or prepackaged foods including soups, cold cuts, bread, and frozen meals since they contain sodium-based preservatives. And watch out for compounds that contain sodium as you scan the ingredient list, like sodium benzoate and sodium tripolyphosphate.

Regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels in a healthy range. Different activities offer various levels of intensity, and there are a variety of ways to get the American Heart Association’s recommended amount of aerobic activity . You should aim for about 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, like brisk walking, or 75 minutes a week of a more intense activity. Many people start off slower and build their way up to a more intense routine.

Get to Know the Team That Builds Alto's Customer-Facing Apps

Imagine an app that allows you to buy things and have them delivered to you the same day, for free. Now take that app and put it in a highly regulated space like pharmacy. You face the challenge not only of building an e-commerce platform from scratch, but also of navigating medication pricing, federal and state regulations, and patient safety—and that's just the way the Patients Team likes it.

"It's a really exciting and fun problem to solve," says Mike Riess, the team's Engineering Manager. Software Engineer Angelique Nehmzow agrees: "There's a really strong product and design aspect, like more traditional startups, but then everything gets a little bit more interesting because it's healthcare."

Below, we chat with the team to learn what it's like to work on Alto's customer-facing apps, which projects are on the horizon, and who makes the best barbecue short ribs.

What does the Patients Team do at Alto? 

Ask anyone on the team why they joined, and chances are, they'll tell you they wanted to be on the product team closest to Alto's customers: "We really try to own the customer experience," says Peter Zeng, the latest Software Engineer to join the team. "If a customer is coming to the web app, or they're coming to our mobile app, we want to make sure that they're able to onboard with us as easily and conveniently as possible."

The team is also responsible for the customer experience beyond onboarding, from the moment a customer schedules a medication for delivery to the time that it shows up on their doorstep. "We already offer great services like free, same-day delivery and cost savings. The Patients Team empowers customers to make the most of our offering," Nehmzow explains. "You can see what prescriptions you have, check on the status of your order, and schedule automatic refills. In a more traditional pharmacy, you don't get that kind of visibility. You have to call them up or even wait in line in person. At Alto, it's a different experience."

What was it like in the team's early days?

Today, there are eleven engineers on the team working to build that better end-to-end experience—but it wasn't always that way. When the team first formed in 2019, it consisted of just three members: Riess, Brian McRae, and Andy Lau, all of whom are still on the team.

"The first priority for us was just stabilizing the foundations," Riess says of the team's early days. Every other week, the three team members, along with Alto co-founders Matt Gamache-Asselin and Jamie Karraker, would meet to audit the app's core flows. "For the first three months we probably didn't make it through some flow at least 50% of the time," Riess recalls. "There would be a ton of bugs in the onboarding experience, things that weren't working with the flows or navigation or deep linking."

Among the team's first projects was a redesign of the checkout flow. "There was a lot of work to be done to streamline the checkout flow, which is pretty much the main function of the app," says McRae, who initially joined the team as a software engineer and later transitioned into product management. "We had to make it easier to add a payment, add your addresses, everything you need to do to schedule your prescription for delivery."

"The growth of the team, in terms of both size and stability of the platform, has allowed us to swing at more interesting bets for the company," Riess says. In particular, the Patients Team has turned their attention toward experiences personalized for specific medical conditions.

"Different customers have different needs. A customer who wishes to start a family will have a different experience than a customer who needs to order their routine heart medications that they've been taking for the last eight years,” McRae says. “The challenge for us is how we serve all these customers well through the app."
